When will Karine Atay find out how long she will spend behind bars for killing husband Atakan?

Killer Karine Atay has been told she will learn how long she will serve behind bars by the end of the month.

Atay was convicted of the manslaughter of husband Atakan Atay on Thursday after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court .

She plunged a knife deep into her husband's chest during a confrontation about her wanting to go out to buy more wine.

Atay claimed she was subjected to years of domestic violence and jurors found her not guilty of murder on the grounds of lack of intent.

The 42-year-old was brought back before the court on Friday for a date to be set for sentence.

Judge Paul Sloan QC told her: "I'm going to adjourn sentence in your case until May 31.

"You will be produced in court in person on that date and you will be remanded in custody pending that hearing."

It was on October 18 last year that Atay killed 45-year-old Atakan at their home on Jasmine Terrace, Birtley, Gateshead.

She claimed he attacked her as she was about to go out to buy more alcohol but said she can't remember picking up a knife or thrusting it into his heart.

When police turned up, body worn camera footage recorded her initially lying that someone else had done it before saying they had been fighting.

The Chronicle has requested the footage be released to us, in line with guidelines which states it should be, having been shown in open court, and the Crown Prosecution Service agreed to release it.

However Northumbria Police has objected to its release on the grounds it may upset Atay's children and the issue may have to be determined by a judge.

We reported previously how Atay had met Atakan while on holiday in his homeland of Turkey around 20 years ago and they were married within months.

She claimed he had been abusive and violent to her throughout the relationship.

In 2010 their daughter, Sophie, tragically died aged two-and-a-half after she was struck down with cancer.

Atay's drinking worsened after that and became a source of conflict between her and Atakan.

Prosecutors said October 18 had been a normal day until it was marred forever by the senseless killing.

Atay had already bought wine from Atakan's shop across the road - named after Sophie - when she decided she wanted more later that night.

Exactly what happened next is unclear but it ended with Atay picking up a kitchen knife and stabbing Atakan in the chest.
