When will Joe Biden become president of the United States of America?

Joe Biden is projected to win the tightly fought race to the White House following his victory in one of the most controversial US elections.

However, he is not quite president - yet.

Mr Biden will now be called the president-elect which is the title given to the incoming leader in the period between election day and inauguration day.

This basically means that the Democrat has to wait until the new year before he can be in office and officially move into the White House.

Mr Biden will not take his place in the Oval Office until January 20 which is always when the new president is always inaugurated as it is enshrined in the US constitution and must be done by noon under the law.

Before then, the new President will take time to prepare his administration and appoint officials.

On the inauguration day itself, a ceremony is traditionally conducted by the Chief Justice.

The vice president-elect, is sworn into office first, followed by the president who takes the oath of office.

This will then be followed by Mr Biden's inaugural address, a key event in US politics where he is expected to set out the vision and tone for the first four years of his administration.

Following the swearing-in ceremonies, the outgoing president leaves the Capitol along with the First Lady.

There are a couple of things that do need to happen first.

On December 14, the electors - the members of the Electoral College - meet in their state HQs and vote for a president and vice president on separate ballots. They will sign, seal and certify six sets of electoral votes.

The votes must be received by the president of the Senate and the archivist no later than nine days after the meeting, according to the website of the National Archives and Records Administration.

On January 3, Congress will meet and and count the electoral votes, before the president of the Senate declares who has been elected president and vice president.

It is only after this that Mr Biden will be sworn in as the new president of the United States.
