When will it stop being sunny? Met Office issues UK thunderstorm warnings for today and tomorrow

Make the most of the sunshine today, because the Met Office are warning thunderstorms are on the way.

Today will be another hot summer's day, with wall-to-wall sunshine and temperatures climbing to 33C.

But it is not going to last for much longer as heavy showers will be moving in from Thursday.

A yellow weather alert for thunderstorms covers Wales, the south west of England and the west coast of Scotland from 4pm on Thursday. That warning stays in place overnight and throughout Friday morning.

Then a second yellow weather alert warning of thunderstorms is in place from midday on Friday until 6pm on Friday - this time covering all of the north of England, most of Scotland and the south east of England.

It warns there is a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded, while damaged could be caused by lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Why are thunderstorms more common during summer?

The weather could cause delays to train and bus services, as well as cause difficult driving conditions on the roads.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Greater Manchester (Met Office)

There is also a slight chance power cuts could occur.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out on Friday afternoon and evening.

"Many places will miss the storms, but where they do occur, torrential downpours could bring 30-50mm rain in a hour, with hail and lightning.

"The storms will slowly clear northeastwards on Friday night, perhaps not clearing northeast Scotland until Saturday morning."

Temperatures will feel a lot cooler compared to Thursday, although forecasters have said temperatures could still reach highs of 31C.

The unsettled conditions are expected to continue over the weekend and into next week.

It will feel a lot fresher, with further outbreaks of rain and thunderstorms likely.
