When will Ireland's pubs open? Where we stand right now as crucial date nears after Government decision

After a weekend which saw late night talks between the Government and officials representing pubs and restaurants, we now have a fairly decent idea as to when we'll be able to sup a glorious pint in our favourite chair.

Of course, for the last few weeks, we've been able to do so while outdoors - but this was a problem for those establishments who didn't have the option to welcome customers with outdoor seating.

There has also been a bit of hassle with the Government's plans to allow people who are fully vaccinated to return for indoor dining ahead of others.

But when exactly will that be the case? Here's the latest update.

Pubs to reopen in phases

Under new legislation, agreed by Cabinet on Monday, indoor dining will reopen in three phases.

Phase one will allow fully vaccinated people or a person who has recovered from Covid-19 allowed to dine indoors.

Phase two will see people allowed indoors with a negative PCR test and phase three will see those with a negative antigen test will be permitted inside pubs.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said the Government is aiming for the laws to come into force next week - no later than July 26.

However, Mr Varadkar has said more work is needed on the use of testing before it’s rolled out.

What happens next

The legislation will need to go to President Michael D Higgins before it is signed off.

The President must consider legislation for at least five days and then sign it into law at the end of the fifth day, or on the sixth or seventh days.

Government and industry sources told the Irish Mirror that it is “widely expected” that this day will be either Thursday, July 22, or Friday, July 23.

Mr Varadkar said that it would be “no later” than Monday, July 26 for saloons to swing their doors back open.

The move was welcomed by Adrian Cummins, chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland.

He told the Irish Mirror: “It’s a monumental day, or a giant leap, towards getting our industry back open.

“And it’s important that when we get open, we stay open."
