When will hairdressers reopen in Wales and what has the Welsh Government said?

Hairdressers across Wales have been eagerly awaiting news on when they can reopen.

Alert Level 4 measures have been in place since December 20, with at least three more weeks of stay at home restrictions announced by the Welsh Government during the most recent review of the regulations on Friday, February 19.

But First Minister Mark Drakeford confirmed he would be looking at the restrictions around non-essential retail and close contact services as part of the Welsh Government's next 21-day review.

It means hairdressers could soon reopen in Wales providing the situation around coronavirus continues to improve.

It will come as welcome news to businesses and customers alike, as some hairdressers have already got hundreds of people pre-booked in. You can read more about this here.

So when will hairdressers open in Wales?

There is no change currently, with Alert Level 4 restrictions remaining in place for a further three weeks.

However, the next notable date for the diary is Friday, March 12, which is when the next big Welsh Government announcement will take place, detailing the 21-day review of the current regulations.

The change that could be announced then, if cases stay low, is the lifting of stay at home restrictions. With this comes other options, including opening non-essential retail and close contact services like hairdressers. You can read more about the full lockdown rules and changes being considered here.

Lifting restrictions around non-essential retail and close contact services would include hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, tattooists, sports and massage therapists, dress fitters, tailors and fashion designers.

It's important to note, however, that this is likely to be a staggered approach so no specific date has been set.

What has the Welsh Government said about hairdressers reopening?

The First Minister outlined what the Welsh Government would be considering in the next review period if improvements to the public health situation in Wales continue and we don't see a further wave of infections caused by any of the new variants circulating in the UK.

Speaking at the briefing, Mark Drakeford said: "If we can lift the stay at home requirement, then we will also look at whether we can start to re-open some non-essential retail and close-contact services, such as hairdressing."

In England, the Prime Minister has outlined the four-step roadmap to getting out of lockdown. Guidelines there state that "non-essential retail, personal care premises, such as hairdressers and nail salons" may open back up on April 12.

However, whether this actually takes place rests on the government's "four tests" being met.

While services like gyms and hairdressers could be allowed to reopen in Scotland by the end of April. You can read all the key dates and details from Scotland's roadmap out of lockdown here.
