When will hairdressers and barbers open in England? Rules you'll have to follow

England has finally reached the next step of the government's roadmap out of lockdown as of Monday, March 29.

Currently, two households (or up to six people from multiple households) can socialise in outdoor locations, and outdoor sports facilities (such as tennis courts) will be allowed to reopen.

It's a welcome step towards normality that will allow families to get together in their gardens in time for Easter.

The following stage of the roadmap, pencilled in for April, will see non-essential businesses allowed to open their doors - including personal care premises.

In some parts of the country hairdressers have been closed for months, so their reopening will be a welcome prospect for the many people in desperate need of a haircut.

When will hairdressers and barbers reopen?

Hairdressers and barbers will be allowed to reopen from 12 April at the earliest.

Provided that the government's four tests are met, 12 April will usher in the next step of the roadmap, and see non-essential businesses, pubs and restaurants reopen alongside personal care premises.

But there will still be rules in place to protect both staff and customers.

Social distancing will be in place, and face masks will be mandatory while indoors. NHS Test and Trace will be up and running to ensure any coronavirus outbreaks can be contained.

Salons may be appointment-only, and you will likely be asked to attend alone, unless you are a carer or with children.

You may need to have your temperature checked before you can enter the premises, and a one-in, one-out system may be in operation for smaller businesses with less room to social distance.

Many beauty salons and hairdressers are already taking pre-bookings for appointments from 12 April.

Demand is expected to be extremely high, with beauty platform Treatwell already reporting a 432% increase in online bookings. In some areas of the country, hairdressers and salons have been closed for months.

In Wales hairdressers have already opened, and in Scotland they'll open their doors on 5 April.
