When will Golden Globes return to TV after diversity scandal?

For the first time since 2008, the 2022 ceremony was not televised after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organises the awards, was accused of corruption and lack of diversity in its voters.

In an investigation by the Los Angeles Times, it was revealed that the HFPA had not included a black member for more than 20 years.

The group of journalists were also accused of poor ethical practices by accepting gifts from film studios for which they were voting.

In response, many decided to boycott the HFPA such as Tom Cruise, who returned three Globes he had been awarded.

NBC dropped the show after the allegations surfaced, demanding “meaningful reform” from organisers.

The organisation has taken the criticism on board and implemented reforms – including initiating 21 members to increase diversity and 100 voters, expanding to non-US residents for the first time.

Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks at NBCUniversal, said: "We recognise the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC.”

Criticism still lingers over the salaries of HFPA members (around $75,000 a year) while non-journalist voters will not be paid – and the non-profit status of the company.

When will the Golden Globes return?

In 2023, the Golden Globes will once again be televised in the US, with the date set for Tuesday January 10.

The Globes traditionally take place on a Sunday in January; however, the first Sunday is New Year’s Day and the next falls on the close of NFL’s regular season.

Sunday January 15 has been booked by the Critics Choice Awards so, as with their reforms, organisers have yielded to change.

NBC will air the event, as it has done since 1996 – although its association with the awards will end after next year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Golden Globes timetable

Monday November 7, 2022 – deadline for motion picture and television submissions

Monday December 12, 2022 – nominations announced

Tuesday January 10, 2023 – live broadcast of the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards
