When do dentists reopen? You can get dental treatment from today

The vast majority of dentists have been closed across the UK since coronavirus lockdown was first announced on March 23.

However, some essential services have began to open recently.

Dental services are allowed to reopen from today, but The British Dental Association (BDA) has warned there will be no return to "business as usual".

Here's what to expect:

When are dentists reopening?

Dental surgeries are allowed to reopen from today, 8 June.

However, practises were told that they could only open if they put proper safety measures in to action.

For many, this means no waiting rooms, PPE and one-way systems.

For this reason, the majority of practises will not be opening immediately until they can put the correct measures into place.

What to do if you have a dental emergency during lockdown?

Dentists that are opening will prioritise those with emergency needs, while others are available to talk over the phone - it’s worth calling your local practice first to see if they can offer advice.

If you’re suffering from severe pain, or have had a tooth knocked out, first try calling your local dental surgery. You can take a combination of 2 x 500mg paracetamol and 2 x 200mg Ibuprofen (Ibuprofen should only be taken if not exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms, and you don’t suffer from stomach problems).

For general toothache, take regular painkillers if you need them, and maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
