When will coronavirus vaccine passports be introduced in Northern Ireland?

Mandatory coronavirus vaccine passports are set to be introduced after Stormont ministers voted to support the move.

Sinn Féin, Alliance, and the SDLP voted for the Health Minister's proposals, while DUP Ministers voted against the move but didn't use a cross community voting mechanism to block it, PA Media reports.

The Department of Health are now drawing up a paper, to be brought forward tonight or tomorrow morning, to explore further details.

Where would vaccine passports be used?

It is reported that the measure would apply for access to:

  • nightclubs
  • hospitality venues which serve food and drink
  • cinemas, theatres, concert halls and conference centres
  • indoor events with 500 or more attendees with some or all of the audience not normally seated
  • outdoor events with 4,000 or more attendees with some or all of the audience not normally seated
  • events where more than 10,000 people will be present regardless of whether they are seated

When will covid passports be introduced in NI?

It is thought that the plan tabled by Mr Swann is for the rules on Covid passports to take effect from 29 November.

But there would be a 14-day grace period until December 13 before fixed penalty notices could be issued.
