When will coronavirus end in Ireland? World Health Organisation expectations as cases and deaths start to fall

The coronavirus has been with the world for almost six months now and while it's showing signs of slowing, there is no end point in sight.

One question a lot of people are asking is when will the dreaded disease and everything that goes with it end?

Unfortunately, no one on the planet has the answer to that question but there are experts who can explain what we are likely to see in the future.

Here's all you need to know about if and when the coronavirus might end.

WHO on if the coronavirus will end

The World Health Organisation has warned that this virus may in fact never leave us.

Irish man and WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan said: "It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away.

“I think there are no promises in this and there are no dates. This disease may settle into a long problem, or it may not be."

When will we get a vaccine?

A vaccine would provide some protection by training people's immune systems to fight the virus and is likely the only way the world can really say they've put an end to coronavirus.

Experts believe a vaccine will be available by mid-2021 which would be seen as a huge feat.

However there is no guarantees of this no matter how hard scientists across the globe work.

When will restrictions end?

At least we do know that Ireland's main coronavirus restrictions will end on August 10th if everything goes to plan.

But without a vaccine, social distancing will remain part of our lives for some time and things like major gatherings and sports events could be some time away yet.
