When will COP26 end as climate change summit enters final week in Glasgow

The COP26 climate summit has been one of the biggest events that has ever been held in Scotland.

Tens of thousands of delegates, world leaders, business chiefs and activists have gathered together in Glasgow over recent days.

It has been branded by many as the world’s last chance at avoiding a potential climate catastrophe.

Several countries have already committed to phasing out the use of the coal and end deforestation by 2030.

But there is still much for delegates to discuss ahead of the conference’s conclusion later this week.

There is a particular importance over this summit as it is the first time that global figures have opened up the Paris Agreement, which was signed in 2015.

All of the countries involved in the talks six years ago pledged to limit global warming to well below two degrees and aim for 1.5 degrees.

Current estimations suggest that the measures agreed will not come close to reaching that target, and it is expected that nations will go further this time around.

Organisers behind COP26 say that the decade out to 2030 will be crucial in the climate change fight.

The conference first kicked off on October 31. A number of leading figures descended on Glasgow a day later for the talks - including the likes of Prince Charles, Joe Biden and Boris Johnson.

Other names that have appeared in the city since then include Leonardo DiCaprio, Greta Thunberg and Barack Obama.

And while the importance of the gathering can never be forgotten, Scots in the central belt of the country have been met with disruption - with roads, cycle paths and walkways closed since the conference’s beginning.

The summit is expected to conclude on Friday, November 12.

It is here when the negotiations over the climate change strategy come to a close. But previous COPs have overrun the designated time.

An example of this came in 2000, when COP6 - which was held at The Hague in the Netherlands - was ‘suspended’ after participants failed to agree on the issues discussed at the conference.

A second part of the climate change event was held in Bonn, Germany in 2001, with the COP6 talks resuming on July 17 to 27 of that year.
