When will Andy Burnham become the UK's Prime Minister?

ANDY Burnham will become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Monday, ending months of uncertainty after Keir Starmer lost the support of many of his MPs.

Before the former Manchester mayor takes on the role as the 49th Prime Minister, the seventh in a decade, Starmer will address the nation.

The outgoing leader is expected to make his statement at 11am before formally resigning to the King.

Burnham will then also make his way to Buckingham Palace, where he will be invited to form a government.

It comes after he was appointed as the official leader of the Labour Party on Friday.

He is also expected to begin the appointment of his Cabinet.

Starmer's resignation, which came just four days after Burnham won his Westminster seat in the Makerfield by-election, triggered what ended up being a one-candidate leadership contest, with 379 Labour MPs nominating him to become the new party leader – and, ultimately, the new PM.

Previously, Starmer's former health secretary Wes Streeting and former armed forces minister Al Carns had set out plans to run in any contest, but eventually backed down to support Burnham's bid.

According to the BBC, Burnham is set to lay out his plans for his tenure in a speech at Downing Street today.

He is expected to describe the start of his leadership as one of "reflection and resolution", saying Britain must be honest about the challenges it faces while demonstrating that it can once again be recognised around the world for effective government.

Setting out his domestic priorities, Burnham will argue that political stability must deliver tangible improvements in people's lives, with a commitment to giving people more breathing room.

He has recently been urged by the Greens to make his stance on new North Sea drilling clear, as the latest rhetoric from US president Donald Trump seeks to pile pressure on him to increase production.

The SNP have also warned that voters have "heard it all before" in terms of empty promises made to Scotland.

He has ruled out calling an early General Election, which is not mandated until August 2029 at the latest, arguing that the country voted for the Labour party in 2022 and his leadership will ensure stability.
