When 'Western Harbour' public meeting with the Mayor is now taking place

A public meeting will give local residents the chance to discuss controversial plans for the ‘Western Harbour’ of Bristol with the city's mayor.

The meeting will see people living in and around the Cumberland Basin, Spike Island, Hotwells, Southville and Ashton Gate given the chance to hear from Marvin Rees and other project leaders working on the pland.

The Western Harbour proposals could see thousands of new homes built on land around the Basin, in Hotwells and on Ashton Meadows on the south side of the river.

It would utilise space freed up by a radical change to the road network, with the ageing A370 flyover and junctions which cross from Hotwells to Ashton Gate removed and replaced by new roads.

A council feasibility plan narrowed down options from nine different ideas to three, which are now being taken forward by a working group set up by the mayor.

There has been criticism of the make-up of that working group, which includes business leaders, planners and developers, and only one representative from the local community.

The public meeting, which is being organised by the Clifton and Hotwells branch of the Labour Party had been planned for November, but was postponed with the announcement of the December General Election last year, because the meeting fell foul of the rules of purdah.

It has now been rescheduled and will take place on Wednesday, January 22, from 6pm at Holy Trinity Church in Hotwells.
