When we will find out if Merseyside is going to be hit with new lockdown measures

Today could be a hugely important day in Merseyside's coronavirus journey.

In recent weeks, infection rates across the region have soared to dangerous levels.

Local leaders are bracing themselves for an announcement today that could see new measures brought in to restrict people's lives across the region.

Update: The Liverpool Lockdown has been announced

With Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens all passing the 100 cases per 100,000 people threshold - and Wirral not far behind - it feels inevitable that some action will be taken by government.

While there is a possibility that nothing could be announced for Merseyside today, leaders here feel its inevitable that some sort of measures will be brought in.

When might we know?

This is difficult to say because the government has had very different approaches to making these announcements in the past.

Greater Manchester's lockdown was announced suddenly at 11pm the night before restrictions would come in, resulting in pretty chaotic scenes.

What do the different levels of lockdown mean?

But last week, new measures for Birmingham were announced as part of a weekly update that is produced by the Department for Health every Friday.

Last Friday, this update explained that the whole Merseyside region had been placed onto a watch list, meaning the government was closely monitoring the situation on the ground here.

So it is this weekly update that people here will be looking out for tomorrow.

The official announcement for Birmingham didn't come until around 6pm last week - but local leaders like the Regional Mayor decided to announce the measures earlier in the day.

The Liverpool Echo will be running live coronavirus coverage throughout the day and will be keeping people updated as soon as we have any information about what could be brought in for our region.
