When was the last General Election and how often do they take place?

This December, the UK could potentially have a new Prime Minister if current PM Boris Johnson fails to win over the public.

Voters will head to their local polling stations on Thursday December 12 in a pre-Christmas General Election - the first winter poll in the UK since 1923 - and make their decision on who they want to lead the country through Brexit.

They will also have their voices heard on which Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Brexit Party or other and independent candidates they want to represent their local constituency.

Parliament was dissolved on November 6 as the campaign trail began.

Mr Johnson pushed for snap December election in October, offering MPs more time to debate his Brexit deal if they agreed to go to the polls.

He also vowed to push for the election if the European Union agreed to a three-month extension for his Brexit bill.

A "flextension" was granted until January 31 2020.

Usually, a general election takes place every five years but this will be the second in the space of two and a half years.

The last general election, which saw Theresa May keep her place as PM, took place on Thursday June 8 2017.

Mrs May called the election two months earlier - and three years before it was due - in a bid to "strengthen her hand" in Brexit negotiations.

Whilst the Conservative Party lost its majority, the Tory leadership continued by forming a minority government with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).
