When to expect torrential rain in the North East with TWO weather warnings issued over three days

The sun is shining in the sky after the washout at the weekend - but the dry weather won't last long.

Two weather warnings for rain are in place over the next three days - with non-stop torrential downpours forecast in the North East.

After a mixed day of sunshine and cloudy skies on Monday, the deluge of rain is set to arrive on Tuesday afternoon.

The first yellow weather warning, which covers the entire North East, begins at midnight on Tuesday morning and lasts for the entire day.

The Met Office has warned of "heavy prolonged rainfall which could lead to local flooding and disruption to transport".

It will feel wet and windy throughout the day with some gale force winds near the coast.

Spray and flooding could cause some difficult driving conditions and there is a chance of disruption to public transport.

There is also a small chance of flood damage to homes and businesses.

Heavy bouts of rain are expected in County Durham in the early afternoon on Tuesday, with other areas experiencing lighter showers.

The heaviest band of rain is forecast to arrive at around 4pm on Tuesday and will last into the evening and overnight.

The next rain warning covers the whole of Wednesday and lasts until midday on Thursday.

Persistent rain will hit the North East with further strong winds and it will feel chilly with highs of just 12C.

Again, there is a chance of flooding and travel disruption through Wednesday and on Thursday morning.

But that won't be the end of the summer showers - further spells of rain are expected on Thursday and Friday afternoons, although temperatures will start to improve with highs of 15C.
