When thunderstorms will hit Leeds today as yellow weather warning issued

Leeds is set to see on-and-off thunderstorms throughout today as a yellow weather warning is issued.

After a long period of hot and sunny weather, the Met Office yellow warning for thunderstorms starts from 10am and lasts until the end of the day. The storms will be 'hit-and-miss' across the country, and could cause torrential downpours and some lightning strikes.

In Leeds, there may be some rain throughout the day today, Monday, August 15 - but lightning is not set to strike until this evening.

After a start with both sun and cloud, Leeds is set to see its first taste of dark clouds and rain around 2pm. This is set to clear up pretty fast though for an otherwise dry afternoon.

The Met Office forecasts the rain will start again from 9pm, bringing with it lightning and thunderstorms from 10pm. The heavy rain will last at least until the end of the day from there.

The yellow warning says there could be possible disruption due to thunderstorms, and the Met Office warns people to expect:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Temperatures are remaining hot in Leeds despite the rain and thunder, with it set to hit around 25 degrees this afternoon.
