When thunderstorms could hit Greater Manchester today as yellow weather warning issued

Greater Manchester is set to be battered by heavy rain and thunderstorms today.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorm has been issued by the Met Office across the region and other parts of the UK.

Heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause transport disruption and flooding in places, meteorologists have warned.

The warning comes after a period of warm and wet weather across the North West in recent days.

But when could we see the thunderstorms?

According to the Met Office, between midday today (August 21) and 10pm, thunderstorms and torrential rain is likely.

"There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus," they said.

"Delays to train services are possible and some short term loss of power and other services is possible, with possible damage due to lightning strikes.

"Flooding of a few homes and businesses could occur."

The day may start with some cloud and sun for some areas in Greater Manchester, according to the weather site.

But heavy rain is due to move in by around 10am and is expected to last throughout the day until 5pm this evening.

Some areas may experience thunderstorms during this period.

Currently the rain is forecast to end at around 7pm this evening, with a fairly clear night ahead until Sunday morning when the rain could return.

Today

Heavy and locally 'torrential' rain last could last most of the day, particularly in the north of the region, according to the Met Office.

"In the south, the rain will be followed by heavy thundery showers through the evening. Feeling muggy with light winds. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

Tonight

Thundery showers are due to continue through to the evening, easing by the early hours.

"A cloud and muggy night following, with some patchy light rain and low cloud over the hills," meteorologists said.

"Minimum temperature 14 °C."

Sunday

Sunday is expected to be drier than Saturday, but the region could still see a scattering of showers around, with some heavy in places.

"Showers fading through the afternoon leaving more frequent sunny spells by the evening.

"Feeling warmer. Maximum temperature 20 °C."
