When the rain will stop this weekend according to the Met Office as snow predicted to hit next week

It's been a dreary day in the South West with overcast skies and heavy rain at points causing flooding across our area.

Already this weekend a lane has closed on the M5 due to flooding and strong winds are being reported on the M48 bridge.

Next week could also see the first proper snow as an 800 mile-wide -3C 'polar pulse' hits the UK from Thursday.

Flood warnings have been issued by the Environment agency in several locations today including in Portishead and on the Somerset coast at Porlock Weir.

In Gloucester, a flood alert has been issued for the Severn estuary from Gloucester to Sharpness.

So when is the wind and rain going to stop? Well, it looks like it's going to clear up by Sunday evening - just in time for work on Monday.

The Met Office has said tonight will be dry with clear spells but showers and rain will arrive from the west later on this evening.

They also warned of the possibility of coastal gales.

They said: "Most of the night looks to be dry with clear spells. However, there will be a few showers and later rain will arrive from the west. Some stronger winds with the potential of coastal gales too.

"Minimum temperature 9 °C."

On Sunday the outlook doesn't improve much with "heavy persistent rainfall" hitting.

The Met Office said for Sunday: "A showery day, with some heavy persistent rainfall moving in during the afternoon.

"Stronger winds picking up through the day, potential gales at the coast. Staying wet into the night. Maximum temperature 15 °C."

When will it pick up?

The Met Office has said that it will be fine and dry for much of Monday and Tuesday but will turn bad again on Wednesday.

They said: "Fine and dry for most Monday and Tuesday, although patchy light rain could be seen by some.

"Turning wet and windy Wednesday, with morning rain and afternoon showers."

When is the snow forecasted?

Britain faces winter's first proper snow as an 800 mile-wide -3C 'polar pulse' delivers a five-day chill from Thursday.

Even the south of England could be threatened by snow and ice next week as the pulse moves in according to The Mirror.

The Met Office is predicting "unsettled conditions" in their long range forecast for next Thursday to Saturday.

They reports: "Unsettled weather by Wednesday bringing outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, for the North and the northwestern parts of the country.

"During the rest of the week unsettled conditions continue with spells of rain followed by brighter, showery interludes. In the northwest, rain, strong winds and gales at times.

"During late November more settled conditions may establish in central and southeastern areas where it will be mainly dry and sometimes bright.

"Temperatures look to be mild on Wednesday, but they are likely to return to near the seasonal average by the end of next week, with an increased risk of overnight frosts.

"There is a chance that drier brighter conditions may extend UK-wide at times. Although uncertain, temperatures are looking to become colder by the end of this period."
