When the new UK 'porn block' comes into force and what it means

A new law is set to overhaul how millions of people access pornographic websites in the UK.

The legislation means that people will need to prove their age before going on the adult websites.

One of the ways this could be achieved is through an expensive 'porn pass' you can buy at shops, but this will not be the only ways to access the websites.

The automatic block coming is being introduced under the Digital Economy Act 2017.

It was brought in an attempt to stop children seeing x-rated and inappropriate content online.

Websites YouPorn and Pornhub, who are owned by the company Mindgeek, are both introducing the checks.

But few people are aware of the change coming in or exactly what it will entail. This is what you need to know.

When is it happening?

It was believed the long-delayed age verification system would roll out this month, but the Government has announced it will go into effect on July 15, reports Wales Online.

The plan has been beset by technical difficulties.

The legislation was passed in 2017 but it has been subject to a number of delays.

The Government had previously said it would be rolled out by the end of 2018.

How will porn be accessed?

At the moment websites simply asks a user if they are over 18 and they can click yes or no with no follow ups or confirmation.

Under the new rules users will be sent to a non-pornographic "landing page" where they will be asked for an email address and password.

They will then have to verify their age using a credit card, passport, mobile SMS or drivers license.

Once they have have set up their AgeID "account", they will be able to log into any porn sites that use the Age ID system with their username and password.

"It is a one-time verification, with a simple single sign-on for future access," AgeID spokesman James Clark told Metro.co.uk

"If a user verifies on one AgeID protected site, they will not need to perform this verification again on any other site carrying AgeID."

There will also be age verification cards for sale in shops which will verify your age.

"The PortesCard is available to purchase from selected high street retailers and any of the UK’s 29,000 PayPoint outlets as a voucher," AgeID said in a statement.

"Once a card or voucher is purchased, its unique validation code must be activated via the Portes app within 24 hours before expiring.

"Once the user has been verified, they will automatically be granted access to all sites using AgeID."

Each PortesCard will cost £4.99 for use on a single device, or £8.99 for use across multiple devices.

Any porn site that fails to comply with the news rules faces a fine of up to £250,000, or a blanket block by UK internet service providers.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will also be able to block porn websites if they fail to show they are denying access to under-18s.

Will it work?

The scheme has been criticised for potential security breaches.

Jim Killock, the executive director of the Open Rights Group, said that if any of the information was leaked it could ruin people lives.

Speaking to the Guardian he said: "It might lead to people being outed.

Meet the mums making pornography they would be happy for their children to watch

"It could also be you’re a teacher with an unusual sexual preference and your pupils get to know that as a result of a leak. It won’t get you sacked for viewing something legal but it could destroy your reputation.

"Politicians don’t understand that data about their porn preferences might end up in the hands of journalists or others."
