When the Met Office says the sun will return as temperatures rise next week

Wales can expect some drier, warmer weather over the next week as the torrential rain leaves and temperatures across the country extend into the high 20s.

With some showers over this coming weekend, the majority of Saturday, June 20 and Sunday, June 21 will be clear.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said the changes to the recent bout of wet weather would start Friday, June 19.

"Today had a dreary start with lots of rain and cloud but the general picture is improving," he said. "Overnight and into the morning there will be some brighter spells, generally more for North Wales, with still some cloud and scattered showers around south, on Saturday morning."

Temperature-wise, Wales could see highs of 20°C and that's where next week's warmer trend would begin.

Oli said: "There's much more drier weather around and there's a greater chance of sunshine through Saturday, much better than we've seen of late.

"A band of rain moving in from the west Saturday into Sunday but will be moving quickly and will clear Wales by early morning. We'll see showers and sunshine as we get to the latter part of the day."

Sunday will be relatively dry and the temperature will venture into the 20s again and that dry weather will also continue into Monday.

The temperatures could go up a notch from Monday, June 22  but the highs of 30°C will likely be concentrated in the south east of England.

Tuesday, June 23 and Wednesday, June 24 will remain dry and bright apart from western areas in Wales possibly getting a little rain overnight from Monday into Tuesday.

"By Monday we could go up a notch into 21°C, and Tuesday, widely across England and Wales will be 24°C to 27°C and then Wednesday 25°C to 28°C, the peaks of those temperatures will probably be more in the usual landlocked areas," said Oli.

But the warmer weather won't last until the following weekend as changeable and cooler conditions are likely to return.
