When the Met Office says it will be as hot as Ibiza this week - and when storms will hit

Bristol's commitment to lockdown measures will be tested this week as a mini-heatwave brings high temperatures and sunny spells across the country.

The Met Office says today (Monday, May 18) and tomorrow will be a mixture of cloudy and sunny conditions while temperatures steadily rise.

By Wednesday parts of the UK, including Bristol, are set to be as warm or warmer than some of Europe's top holiday destinations, including Marbella and Ibiza.

Forecasters say the mercury will rise to 24C in Bristol, with plenty of sunshine forecast throughout the day.

The Met Office forecast says: "A cloudy Tuesday morning with rain in the north.

"Through the afternoon the cloud will break giving some longer periods of sunshine and making for a warm day. Maximum temperature 22C.

"Warm and dry on Wednesday with sunshine after a cloudy start."

However, it looks like the weather will become more unsettled from Thursday (May 21) onwards, with thunderstorms and "blustery showers" possible.

The forecast for the south west reads: "Sunny spells with rain or even thunderstorms for a time Thursday.

"Rain overnight into Friday with blustery showers later."

The long range forecast, which covers the rest of the month, then states: "It is expected that this period will start very warm with good spells of long, fine and dry weather throughout.

"However, it is possible that following this, rain will develop across some western regions, perhaps spreading east at times whilst weakening.

"These unsettled periods carry the risk of strong winds, mainly for western areas, and rain may turn heavy at times, however confidence is low for this presently.

"There is a risk of a few thunderstorms forming ahead of any bands of rain. Probably becoming less warm, but temperatures remaining above average for the time of year."
