When the Met Office says it is going to stop raining

There has not been much of it during April and May, but many people in Wales have woken up to heavy rain on Wednesday (May 11) morning. It is causing some difficult driving conditions on several roads and one lane of the M4 near Swansea was even closed because the amount of surface water was causing difficult driving conditions.

The rain, however, will be welcomed by gardeners and farmers after Met Office figures showed that around a third less rainfall than the average fell in the UK during April.

The UK this year has continued the recent trend of dry Aprils in recent years, with an average of 48.9mm falling; this is just 68% of the long-term average. This remains wetter than just 20.6mm of rainfall in April 2021, and even the 30mm of rainfall in April 2020.

But the Met Office forecast for Wales is showing that the rain is not going to last for long.

The forecast for Wednesday says: "A wet start with persistent and in places heavy rain across the country. Rain will clear from the west through the morning into the early afternoon, with brighter skies and the odd shower following. Feeling pleasant in the sunshine. Breezy. Maximum temperature 16 °C."

It adds for tonight: "A few showers in the north and west this evening, otherwise a dry night with lengthy clear periods and just the odd patch of low cloud. Winds easing slowly. Minimum temperature 6 °C."

Thursday looks set to be "dry and sunny", but there will be some light showers during the afternoon with highs of 15 °C.

The Wales outlook for Friday to Sunday says: "Bright and breezy on Friday with sunny spells. Winds easing over the weekend, and it should remain dry throughout with some sunshine at times. Turning warmer too."

The long range forecast for the UK is showing that there might be more unsettled weather for western parts later this month.
