When the Met Office say the cold snap is going to end as tropical winds bring highs of 14°C

Snow has fallen across some parts of Wales this week but the cold snap is set to come to an abrupt end over the weekend as tropical winds are drawn in from the Atlantic.

Wintry showers and sunny spells are forecast for Wales on Friday, with brisk winds making it feel colder, but temperatures could rise to nearly 14°C by Monday.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said in the 10-day forecast: "We have already packed quite a bit of weather into the year so far and we are going to see the rather changeable theme for the next few days.

"Spells of wet weather coming in with some snow on the hills replaced by drier and brighter. Temperatures will be back on the up as we head through the weekend, particularly into the early part of next week, with Monday looking particularly, especially mild.

"Weather patterns are also likely to settle down with high pressure moving in, bringing a largely dry week."

He said that a wave of "tropical air" will move in from the south west on Sunday night into Monday.

"Temperatures are likely to be back up into the teens which is very mild for January," he said. "The main gist as we go into next week is that a change in the position of the jet stream, pushing further north, meaning high pressure will start to build in from the south west.

"At the moment the jet stream is close to the north but next week it looks like it will shift further north, taking the low pressure systems with it, allowing high pressure to move in, which generally means drier weather. We are pretty confident this will be the set-up as the models agree.

"It means a lot of dry weather for most but it looks like it will be predominantly cloudy though".

The Met Office forecast for Wales says: "There will be sunny spells and wintry showers on Friday, perhaps with hail and thunder. A brief spell of more general rain and hill snow possible in the south. Brisk winds making it feel cold. Maximum temperature 7°C."

The outlook for Saturday to Monday says: "W indy and milder Saturday with outbreaks of rain clearing to showers later. Dry for much of Sunday but outbreaks of rain arriving by evening. Cloudy, breezy, and mild on Monday."
