As we approach the 2023 local elections, it's important to look at how the political landscape has changed since the last time people went to the polls.
Local elections took place across the country on May 5, 2022, with 4,411 council seats up for grabs.
The biggest highlight from the 2022 local elections was that the Conservatives were dealt a devastating blow - losing 487 council seats while Labour gained 108.

However, where Labour seemed to shine the most was in London where it captured the City of Westminster seat which most believed was an easy win for the Tories. This signified a small recovery for Labour which performed exceedingly poorly in the 2019 general election.
Overall though, many analysts at the time agreed that Labour struggled to completely seize the opportunity from the Tory's decline. In fact, the 2022 local elections signified a division across the country, with other minor parties such as the Greens and Lib Dems earning more seats than Labour in England.
In fact, outside of London, Labour lost voter share in every other part of the UK. One of the key things analysts will be keeping an eye on in the 2023 local elections is whether Rishi Sunak can help recover the Conservative losses with his fresh leadership and Labour's performance as Sir Keir pushes forward to land his Party in government in the next general election.
