When the Hound from Game of Thrones worked shifts in a Glasgow swimming pool

Before playing much-loved character the Hound in Game of Thrones, Glasgow born actor Rory McCann was best known as being the face of some rather cheeky Scottish adverts.

A role which saw him occupy an iconic position at the heart of Scottish pop culture was his stint as the Scott’s Porage Oats man back in September of 1998.

His first role in a TV series saw him play a Glaswegian wheelchair-bound personal trainer and swimming pool receptionist in Channel 4's Scottish BAFTA award-winning show The Book Group.

The comedy drama ran for two seasons between 2002 and 2003.

Starring alongside fellow Glasgow born actors Derek Riddell and Michelle Gomez, the show became something of a critics' favourite.

McCann played Kenny McLeod in the show, which revolved around the life of an American arriving in Glasgow and starting up a book club to try to find friends with similar interests.

Kenny worked behind the reception desk at a swimming pool and could often be seen reading books while at work.

The gentle and nice character was a world away from the murdering savage role that won him all sorts of acclaim in Game Of Thrones.

Following the Channel 4 role, McCann went on to make his Hollywood debut in 2004 historical drama Alexander alongside Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie. He played the role of ancient general Craterus.
