When the Flying Scotsman will be in Greater Manchester in 2020

The iconic Flying Scotsman is set to steam onto the East Lancashire Railway for a series of visits throughout 2020.

Fans will be able to enjoy a return trip behind the nation's favourite steam train on the Flying Scotsman's passenger service as it chuffs along the 12-mile route between Bury , Rawtenstall and Heywood throughout May and September next year.

Enjoying views across the picturesque Irwell Valley, train-lovers will be able to see the locomotive in person at a series of special events, including a number of fine-dining experiences.

As well as the opportunity to ride behind the legendary engine along the scenic Lancashire line, Flying Scotsman will also be making special appearances at some of the railway’s major events such as Day out with Thomas and the award-winning 1940s weekend.

It will also visit several other heritage railways in 2020 as well as hauling main line tours.

The A3 60103 Flying Scotsman will be operating on the East Lancs Railway between May 8 - 10 and September 26 - 27, 2020.

Tickets start at £18 for adults and £12 for kids and will go on sale from Monday 9 December via the official website .

Dining experiences start at £35 per person.

Famous for becoming the very first engine to reach 100mph in 1934, Flying Scotsman was saved for the nation in 2004 after a widespread fundraising campaign involving public donations and the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

The 70ft long locomotive underwent a £4.2million restoration by Lancashire based engineering firm, Riley & Son (E), which was completed in 2016.

Since then, over 45,000 people have enjoyed a ride behind Flying Scotsman at the East Lancashire Railway, a route that uses a range of preserved steam and diesel locomotives to haul vintage train services through the scenic Irwell Valley.

Full details of the programme are still to be confirmed and will be announced on the Flying Scotsman website.
