Well, if you've ventured outside the house this week at all you'll know that autumn is well and truly here.

And with that comes the inevitable changing of the clocks.

This well and truly signals that we are heading into winter, and the minute this happens you'll notice the darker nights a lot earlier.

British Summer Time ends on the final Sunday of the year, which means the clocks will go back on October 31 - that's right, Halloween!

For those who forget, it's helpful to know the phrase " spring forward, fall back" as a handy way to remember.

This means the clocks will go back an hour at 2am on the final day of this month so people will gain an extra hour in bed after any Halloween party celebrations.

So here's everything you need to know about this age old tradition.

Why do we change the clocks?

The clocks go back as a way to make the most of natural daylight, the Liverpool Echo reports.

The clocks go forward by an hour to mark the start of British Summer Time at 1am on the last Sunday of March.

Fast forwarding the clocks in spring means nights are lighter for commuters coming home after work - and there is more sun in the evenings.

But, for those of us who get up early, it is a brief return to darker mornings as we return to Greenwich Mean Time when the clocks go back.

When did we start changing the clocks?

During the First World War, Germany and Austria introduced clock changing in a bid to save on coal consumption. The Allies followed suit.

It is believed adding extra daylight hours into the working day saves on energy.

How do I update my tech devices?

Mobile phones should automatically update with the new times depending on the model you own.

Apple iPhones, iPad and Macs update automatically, but it is advised you check you have ‘set automatically’ turned on in your ‘date and time’ settings.

If you have an Android phone, it is also advised that you check you have 'automatic updates' set to your phone.
