There was official protocols introduced following the monarch's death in Scotland, officially known as ‘Operation Unicorn' . It covers the activities for each day from the announcement of her passing up until day ten - the day of the state funeral.

This guidance sets out the how bell ringing plays its part throughout that process and has been formulated in consultation with The Royal Household and Lambeth Palace.

On the announcement, bells will be rung or tolled at the discretion of local Parochial Church Councils. They will be rung for an hour and will be heard across the nation.

The announcement, made after 6pm, will mean that bells will be rung the following day (September 9) at noon. According to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, the bells will remain half or fully muffled until the day that the Palace proclaims the new Monarch. At that point bells should be rung open in celebration of the accession.

The news of The Queen's passing comes after the monarch was put under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health. Immediate family members were informed, who travelled to Balmoral following the news.
