When the A4 Portway and Bridge Valley Road will reopen to traffic

There has been traffic chaos in Bristol today (October 21) with Bridge Valley Road closed and the A4 Portway reduced to one lane.

There are temporary traffic lights in place to regulate traffic flow, but people faced two-hour delays on their morning commutes.

Now, ahead of this evening's rush hour, Bristol City Council has issued an update on the works and said it plans to remove temporary traffic lights to reopen the Portway fully at 3.30pm.

However Bridge Valley Road will remain closed until approximately 6pm.

What is causing the issues?

Council contractors were working throughout the weekend to remove a boulder, which had been threatening to crash down the Avon Gorge.

The work overran, leading to the continued closure of Bridge Valley Road, and temporary traffic lights on the A4 Portway. The knock-on effects of this caused traffic jams miles away, as Bristol’s fragile road network ground to a halt.
