When Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Asda and Co-op reopen on Monday after Queen's funeral

If you need to pick up some shopping today you may think all shops are closed.

Major supermarkets have decided to shut for the Queen's funeral, but Tesco's and Sainsbury's smaller 'Express' and 'Local' stores will open later on Monday once the funeral is over.

Asda will reopen stores - including larger supermarkets - in the afternoon, while Morrisons will open petrol stations but keep supermarkets shut. Co-op will reopen stores in the afternoon too.

Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, Iceland and M&S will all stay shut. They reopen on Tuesday morning.

The supermarkets that will reopen today are all planning to do some from 5pm. The Queen's funeral begins at 11am and is due to finish around noon.

When Tesco, Sainsbury's, Co-op, Asda and Morrisons open after Queen's funeral

Stores will be closed on Monday September 19 until the late afternoon/early evening. Some supermarkets, notably Tesco and Sainsbury's, are only planning to open smaller "Express" and "Local" branches. Others, like Asda, will reopen larger superstores too.

Tesco

Tesco confirmed larger stores - like the Tesco Extra supermarket in Kingston Park, Newcastle, will shut all day. Its Express stores will open from 5pm.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK CEO said: “We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service. On Monday 19th September, in order for our colleagues to pay their respects, our large stores will be closed all day and our Express stores will remain closed until 5pm.”

Sainsbury's

Smaller 'Local' convenience stores (sometimes referred to as 'little Sainsbury's) and petrol stations will open from 5pm to 10pm. Larger 'big Sainsbury's' superstores will remain closed all day.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In honour of Her Majesty and so our colleagues can pay their respects, all Sainsbury’s supermarkets and Argos stores will be closed on Monday, September 19.

"This includes Groceries Online and Argos Fast Track delivery. Our convenience stores and petrol filling stations will be open from 5pm to 10pm to allow our customers to pick up essential items, while select stores in central London will open to serve those attending the funeral in person. We thank our customers for their understanding.”

Asda

Supermarkets - including bigger Asda stores like the superstore near the MetroCentre in Gateshead - will reopen from 5pm and shut at 10pm, though hours can vary.

Asda says: "As a mark of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, all Asda stores will be closed on Monday 19th September until 5pm to allow our customers and colleagues to recognise the passing of our late Monarch and commemorate her steadfast service to our nation. We will not be offering online deliveries on Monday 19th September.

Morrisons

Supermarkets will be closed throughout Monday September 19. But petrol stations at Morrisons supermarkets - which include small convenience stores - can open from 5pm.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "All our supermarkets will be closed on Monday September 19 as a mark of respect and so colleagues can pay tribute to Her Majesty," a spokeswoman for the supermarket said.

"At 5pm our petrol filling stations will reopen."

Co-op

Stores will be closed on Monday until 5pm when they can reopen

Co-op says: "We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen and offer our sincere condolences to The Royal Family. As a mark of respect our stores will be closed on Monday 19th September until 5pm."
