When speed cameras will go live on A19 Testo's roundabout in South Tyneside

Speed cameras are set to go live at one of Tyneside's busiest junctions where major roadworks are taking place.

Work started in March on a £125m project to improve the A19 Testo's roundabout area in South Tyneside .

As part of the scheme, the A19 will be raised above the Testo’s junction and new slip roads will be built to connect the roundabout to the A184.

How Testos roundabout should look once finished

When the work is complete, drivers travelling on the A19 will no longer need to negotiate the junction and will be able to continue uninterrupted along the road.

A number of average speed cameras have been installed in the area, to ensure safety during the duration of the roadworks, however they have not been switched on as yet.

Now Highways England has confirmed the cameras will become operational by next week.

And anyone caught flouting the lowered 40mph limit can expect a fine.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "The safety cameras will be activated once police checks have been completed, which is expected to be next week.

"The speed limit in the areas covered by the safety cameras is 40mph."

The project, scheduled to finish by 2021, aims to ease congestion and cut journey times along the route.
