When should your Christmas decorations come down?

The presents have been opened and the festive food has been eaten... except for the leftovers which seemingly last for months.

Now Christmas and Boxing Day are over and done with for another year, it's back to reality for many of us.

With most children not returning to school until next week - unless further Covid restrictions are imposed - it can be difficult to know when to call it a day and take down the Christmas decorations.

Really, it's down to personal preference and whether you want to follow tradition or not.

Most people take down their decorations on the Twelfth Night, which is, unsurprisingly, the twelfth day after Christmas.

It signals the end of the festive season and it's believed by many to be back luck to keep decorations up after this date.

The Twelfth Night this year is Thursday, January 6, 2022.

However, Catholics traditionally wait until January 7, to take their trees down, as that is the day after Epiphany.

The Epiphany is a feast day which celebrates the revelation of God incarnating as Jesus Christ.

Some Christians might not take their decorations down until as late as February.

That's because their Christmas celebrations continue to Candlemas - a Christian Holy Day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple - which takes place on February 2.

Some wait until after Candlemas to remove their Christmas tree and decorations, while others take them down on the Twelfth Night.
