When should you get a new passport?

As British holidaymakers resume their overseas travels, people with red passports are being reminded to check if their document is still valid before trying to head abroad.

Following Britain’s departure from the EU, burgundy passports are in the process of being replaced by new blue ones. But an EU rule change risks catching some red passport holders unawares when they try to travel to the continent.

Here’s what you need to know about the post-Brexit passport rules.

Can I use a red passport after Brexit?

Holidaymakers can still use a red (or burgundy) passport after Brexit, but they’re being advised to be alert to a recent change in the rules.

Passports are now only valid for exactly 10 years after the date they were issued. If your passport says it’s valid for additional months beyond the 10th anniversary of the issue date, these extra months will no longer count when travelling to the EU.

When should I replace my passport?

If your passport expires less than six months after the date of your return from your holiday, it’s best to go ahead and renew your passport .

The Home Office itself says that if your current passport is older than nine years and six months on the date you’re planning to leave the UK, you shouldn’t travel on it.

How much does it cost to renew your passport?

Renewing or replacing a passport costs £75.50 if you apply online and £85 if you do it using a paper form.

How long does it take to get a new passport?

Getting a new passport can take up to three weeks, but it might take as long as eight weeks if there are delays.

If you really can’t wait, then there is another option. The Post Office’s Fast Track service only takes one week, but it costs £142 for adults and £122 for kids.
