When should I put my Christmas tree and decorations up? And when should I take them down?

The Christmassy evenings have crept in and the lights are on in Dublin city centre.

While it may feel like the festive season is on the way, there's still the ongoing debate on whether the Christmas tree should be put up anytime soon.

Many homes may put their tree up on historical days, but more and more it seems that families across Ireland are creating their own traditions.

Arguably, there is no right or wrong - but if you're in doubt, we're here to help out.

When do I put up my Christmas tree?

There’s no hard and fast rule about when you should put up your Christmas tree, but traditionally you're not meant to do it until a bit closer to the big day itself.

A lot of people choose to put up the Christmas tree 12 days before Christmas day, on the 13th of December but if you're traditional you might not put the tree up until after noon on Christmas eve.

It is also common in some communities to put up the Christmas tree on December 6 in honour of Saint Nicholas.

In Ireland December 8 is a traditional day for putting up the tree - the Feast of the Immaculate Conception - and considered a holy day.

When to take Christmas decorations down

In Ireland, it's the day known as Nollaig na mBan or "Women's Little Christmas" is considered the traditional day to take Christmas decorations down.

It's on 6 January and has picked up its name because historically it was a day when Irish men took on the household duties instead of the women.
