When severe gale force winds up to 90mph will hit Scotland with 'danger to life' warning

Winds with a 'danger to life' warning will thrash Scots in the north as two weather warnings have been issued for tonight and Monday.

Severe gales reaching 80 to 90mph are expected to hit storm-weary Scots.

The first Met Office warning in the northwest lasts from 9pm tonight to 6am tomorrow.

Gusts will move eastward as a second wind warning is in place from midnight to noon tomorrow in the northeast.

The weather warnings state: "Very windy weather is possible across northern parts of Scotland. There is a risk of disruption to travel, particularly ferry services."

Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible, warns the Met Office.

Strengthening winds will pick up from the late afternoon according to BBC Weather Scotland.

Wind weather warning - what to expect

  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
  • Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
  • Road, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
  • Some roads and bridges may close
  • Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties

BBC Weather Scotland forecaster Gillian Smart said: "Especially during the second half of the afternoon, winds strengthening from the southwest and that's because we have a deepening area of low pressure moving in that's going to bring severe gale force winds tomorrow night in the far north and northwest."

The gales will persist through Monday morning particularly in the northern isles.

For the rest of Scotland, Gillian said: "Monday will be a blustery day generally. Some decent spells of sunshine for many but a scattering of showers in the north and west."

The last month has been full of severe weather following a recent ice warning on Friday and, of course, Storm Barra and Storm Arwen.
