When 'RoboCop' visited a 1980s Edinburgh pub to promote release of hit new film

A photo has resurfaced showing RoboCop cleaning up crime in late 1980s Edinburgh.

The picture which was shared by Chris Burden, 61, on social media has gone viral, with Edinburgh residents reminiscing about witnessing the movie crime buster's arrival firsthand.

In the picture, RoboCop, who tackles crime on the streets of a future dystopian Detroit, can be seen outside the iconic Chesser Inn.

Locals joked whether he had been scrambled to clear out the bar after a fight had erupted over the jukebox or if he was tending to an angry punter attacking the puggy.

But Chris says that he thinks the crime fighting machine was perhaps on site to promote the release of the first RoboCop film for VHS at the local Viz video store, after it was released in 1987.

This was later confirmed to be the case by those commenting on Chris’s post.

He says that he remembers leaving his home in Silverknowes as a Napier student to capture photographs of things that he found interesting around the city.

And the now technical writer says that when cycling he noticed a crowd of around 20 to 30 people which he thought was odd for the Chesser area.

On taking the picture, the Leith resident said: “It was pure chance that I captured the image and it was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

“I have lived in Edinburgh all my life and when I was in my early twenties I remember cycling around Edinburgh with a camera thinking I was something of an artist, which did not go far as I have now ended up as a technical writer.

“I was studying technology with industrial studies at Napier at the time and when I approached Chesser I noticed a crowd of around 20 to 30 people. I then thought to myself what is that in a big silver plastic suit? You do not see that everyday.

“There were people commenting on the post in the Lost Edinburgh Facebook group saying they were there on the day, so we think it was for a promotion at a local video shop at the time.”

RoboCop is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner.

Set in a crime-ridden Detroit, Michigan, in the near future, RoboCop centers on police officer Alex Murphy - played by Peter Wller - who is murdered by a gang of criminals.

He is subsequently revived by the Megacorporation, Omni Consumer Products, as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop. Unaware of his former life, RoboCop executes a brutal campaign against crime while coming to terms with the lingering fragments of his humanity.

The film was a surprising hit for global audiences at the cinema and made a hefty profit for its creators.
