When public scrutiny of appointments goes too far

Amanda Spielman

The process of referring proposed government appointments to further committee scrutiny is flawed (Morgan takes on MPs in fight for her choice of Ofsted head, 9 July). Recently the appointment of the chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission was referred to both the joint committee on human rights and the women and equalities committee. (I declare an interest as a member of the JCHR.) In the process the matter became public knowledge with press comment, just as the Ofsted position has – quite inappropriate in my view in the middle of a determination as to whether or not a person should be appointed to a job or a position.

In the interests of proper professional appointment procedures and fairness to applicants, I think the current system should be reviewed.
