When political PR stunts go wrong

What do George Galloway's appearance on Big Brother, Neil Kinnock's stroll along the beach in 1983 and William Hague's baseball cap have in common?

They are the top three political PR gaffes of all time, according to PR week. Hague, then the newly-elected Tory leader, chose the unfortunate headgear on a theme park visit in 1997. Kinnock famously fell over during a stroll along Brighton beach while Galloway, well, you know all about Galloway.

Rather surprisingly, perhaps, Tony Blair's game of "head tennis" with Kevin Keegan in 1995 is PR Week's top political PR hit. It portrayed the Labour leader as a "sporty man of the people. One of Alastair Campbell's finest moments," says the magazine.

Next up is the "iconic picture" of Margaret Thatcher in a Challenger tank in 1986, while third is Michael Portillo "becoming a single mum" in a BBC2 life swap documentary two years ago, although Portillo by then was more interested in broadcasting than politics.

Do you agree? Which politician plays the press the best, and what are your top political PR hits and misses of all time? Noel Gallager at Number 10? Charles Kennedy in an EastEnders Christmas special? Or anything John Kerry did in the last US presidential election?
