When new Co-operative store will open in Southville

A new convenience store is opening in south Bristol later this week following a £750,000 investment.

The Co-operative is opening its latest branch in the city in Coronation Road, Southville, as part of a larger scheme which has involved the redevelopment of Cooperage Lane.

The 2,500 sq ft store, which has created at least 12 jobs, will run on 100 per cent renewable electricity and will provide a funding boost for local causes through Co-op’s membership scheme, said a spokesperson.

Opening between 7.30am until 10pm daily, it will also feature a bakery and coffee dispenser.

The store will be based at 171 - 178 Coronation Road (Google Maps)

Bristol City Council approved a planning application for the store last year despite local opposition. Concerns over potential noise and disturbance from deliveries as well as increased traffic were voiced.

Sue Wells, Co-op store manager, said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to carry out such significant investment in the area.

"It really is exciting to be opening Co-op’s newest store and we are looking forward to serving the community from our new store.

"Our aim is to operate at the heart of local life, a community hub. The investment is a great way to mark the Co-op’s 175th anniversary year."

The store will offer compostable carriers for shoppers who forget their bags for life.

The company says the not-for-profit bags, priced at 5p, are a more environmentally friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags, with a secondary use as a food waste bin liner which can then be turned into peat free compost.

When does the store open?

The store will open this Friday (November 29) at 171 - 178 Coronation Road, BS3 1RF.

Shoppers can become a co-owner and member of the shop if they wish, which brings with it a number of benefits including 5 per cent off when they purchase own-brand products.
