When Muhammad Ali fought Al "Blue" Lewis at Croke Park in 1972

Croke Park has staged the best GAA matches for well over 100 years, but it also played host to boxing great Muhammad Ali in 1972.

'The Greatest' fought Al "Blue" Lewis at the Dublin stadium, stopping him in the 11th round via technical knockout.

It was the first of three times that Ali would visit the Emerald Isle, with further trips coming in 2003 and 2009.

The 1972 fight was organised and co-promoted by a former circus strongman, London-based publican Butty Sugrue who was originally from Killorglin, Co Kerry.

As part of the pre-publicity for the bout, Ali was taught how to use a hurley and sliotar by former Kilkenny hurler Eddie Keher.

He also done an hour long interview with RTE for a fee of £100 in which he described Joe Frazier as a "tramp" and "slave" who lived on a "chicken plantation".

Ali also met with then Taoiseach Jack Lynch and civil rights leader Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, who described the boxing legend as "the most handsome man I have ever laid my eyes on".

The Kentucky native visited a few pubs to take in the Irish atmosphere and also had a cup of tea with an elderly woman.

Ali's opponent for the Croke Park fight was a former prisoner, who had been sentenced to life behind bars for manslaughter.

When Lewis was released early, he became one of Ali's sparring partners with the former heavyweight champion later promising him a fight.

Tickets reportedly sold slowly for the fight, but thousands of fans stormed the gates of GAA Headquarters to get a glimpse of the action.

Ali looked to be cruising to victory in the early rounds of the bout, but Lewis came into the contest in the eighth and ninth rounds before the referee stopped it in the eleventh with Ali winning by TKO.

It wasn't the most famous of Ali's bouts, but it is remembered fondly by those lucky enough to have attended it.
