James Gunn confirms when 'Superman' will be released on HBO Max – and I know what I'll be doing this weekend

A shot of David Corenswet's Superman in his 2025 feature film.

It's official: this year's Superman movie is coming to HBO Max on Friday, September 19.

Taking to Instagram today (September 16), lead star David Corenswet posted an image showing the film's title card on HBO Max. A message saying "Coming Friday' can be seen underneath the title and a brief plot synopsis. James Gunn later confirmed – via X/Twitter – that the DC Universe (DCU) movie would arrive on the service on that date, too.

If you're not subscribed to HBO Max but live in the US, don't fret. Per a Warner Bros. press release, the DCU Chapter One film will also make its debut on HBO, i.e. Warner's linear TV network, starting at 5pm PT / 8pm ET on Saturday, September 20. So, those of you who have access to the cable network can see what all of the fuss is about, or re-watch one of this year's best new movies for the umpteenth time.

When will 'Superman' come out on other streaming services worldwide?

Unfortunately, there's no word on whether Gunn's Superman movie will come to other streaming platforms on the same day. HBO Max isn't available worldwide, so it's highly unlikely that viewers in, say, the UK will be able to catch it this Friday.

Of course, there's still the opportunity to rent or buy the superhero flick via various digital stores, which has been the case since August 15. So, if you live in a nation where HBO Max, aka one of the world's best streaming services, hasn't launched, you'll need to visit the Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, Microsoft, Sky, and YouTube stores to watch it.

If – and, hopefully, when – Superman is released on other streaming services, these are its most likely destinations outside of the US, Australia, and other nations where HBO Max has launched:

  • Australia – Binge or Stan
  • Canada – Crave or Netflix
  • India – Disney+ Hotstar, JioCinema, or Prime Video
  • New Zealand – Neon
  • UK – Sky/Now TV
