When Manchester United will announce Matheus Cunha's shirt number after completing £62.5m move

Matheus Cunha’s Manchester United squad number will be announced in due course amid reports he will take the No. 10 shirt from Marcus Rashford.

Cunha’s move to United was officially finalised last Thursday after the £62.5million release clause in his Wolves contract was triggered.

However, United supporters have been kept in the dark as to what number will be on the back of the Brazil international's shirt next season, and the wait to find out will go on for little while longer.

The club state the hope is Cunha's shirt number will be revealed in the coming weeks. Perhaps around the time the first-team players return from their summer break next month.

Cunha was worn a variety of shirt numbers throughout his career. Starting out with 70 at Sion, to wearing 20 at RB Leipzig, and a mix of 26, 10, and 9 during his time at Hertha Berlin.

He switched between 19 and 9 at Atletico Madrid before taking on 10 in 2024 at Wolves after wearing 12 across a couple of seasons.

Interestingly, there was a report at the end of May that claimed the Red Devils offered Cunha his preferred No. 10 shirt - which has been held by Rashford since 2018 - in a bid to get a deal over the line.

That suggested Rashford would be leaving Old Trafford this summer, with the England international considered surplus under Ruben Amorim having fallen out of favour late last year.

That said, talk surrounding the former Aston Villa loanee’s future has gone quiet of late thus increasing the likelihood of the 27-year-old reporting to Carrington for the start of pre-season training next month.

United's pre-season fixtures kick off on 19 July with a clash against Leeds United in Stockholm, before heading Stateside for the Premier League Summer Series against West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton.
