When Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will find out Ballon d'Or fate

Liverpool's defensive powerhouse Virgil van Dijk will find out if he has been named as a Ballon d'Or nominee next month.

In a press conference hosted by France Football on Thursday, the publication revealed the nominations will be announced on October 21.

Van Dijk, who is currently the bookmakers' favourite to take home the prestigious Golden Ball, could become the first defender to win the award since Italian icon Fabio Cannavaro in 2006.

The Netherlands captain would also become the second ever Liverpool player to be crowned the world's best since Michael Owen in 2001.

Since his £75million arrival from Southampton in 2018, the centre-back has transformed Liverpool's defence.

Van Dijk has helped steer the Reds to two Champions League finals, Super Cup glory, and the 28-year-old also played a key part in last season's Premier League title race.

Once the list of 30 nominees is revealed next month, a jury of 180 journalists will then vote on who should be crowned the winner.

The 64th awards ceremony is set to take place on Monday, 2 December in Paris.
