The day Leeds United put five past Manchester United in Elland Road thrashing

Mick Jones needs no introduction when it comes to Leeds United supporters.

The legendary striker, signed from Sheffield United in 1967, went on to find the net 77 times during 220 appearances for the Whites and formed a lethal partnership with Allan Clarke.

Perhaps his finest hour came back in 1972 when he scored his first league hat-trick for Leeds in a 5-1 mauling of Manchester United.

A bumper crowd of 45,394 packed into Elland Road on February 19, 1972, to watch Don Revie's Leeds record a famous victory. After Manchester United held the upper hand in the 1960s, this result confirmed the balance of power was now shifting to West Yorkshire and Leeds were overtaking their rivals as a footballing force.

Despite the result being a six-goal thriller, it was not until the second half when the floodgates opened. After a goalless first half, Leeds needed just two minutes to break the deadlock. Eddie Gray was the architect, seeing his shot pushed on to the post but Jones was on hand to fire home the opener.

Elland Road was now rocking and the fans were given more to cheer on 54 minutes when Leeds made it 2-0 through Clarke, flicking home Jones's shot following good work by Peter Lorimer.

The two-goal lead was shortlived as the visitors reduced the deficit through Francis Burns three minutes later, but Leeds were relentless and poured forward at every opportunity with wave after wave of attacks.

It was soon 3-1 when Jones headed home his second after getting on the end of Billy Bremner’s cross and Jones completed his hat-trick from close range after Gray and Lorimer combined to open up the Manchester United defence.

The rout was complete when Jones turned provider for Lorimer to blast home into the roof of the net. The five Leeds goals came during an incredible 27-minute blitz.

The Leeds United team that day was Sprake; Madeley, Cooper; Bremner, Charlton, Hunter; Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles, E. Gray. Unused Sub: Jordan.
