When Leeds set to be hit by torrential rain and floods as Met Office warns of danger to life

Leeds will be battered by heavy rain this week, with the Met Office warning of a danger to life caused by the flooding expected.

The Met Office have issued the weather warnings for Yorkshire this week as the region is set to be hit with torrential downpours - leading to a risk of flooding and travel disruption.

Yellow and amber warnings come into place from 6am on Tuesday, with the amber warning remaining in place until late evening on Wednesday and the yellow warning in place until Thursday.

For those under the amber warning, including Leeds, West Yorkshire and parts of South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire, a danger to life warning has been issued by the Met Office, who have said that damage to homes and businesses is likely, with fast-flowing and deep floodwater likely to prove dangerous.

Power cuts and loss of other services to certain homes and businesses are also expected.

Chief Meteorologist Neil Armstrong, said: "A wide area of rainfall will move across central parts of the UK on Monday evening and bring heavy rain for the following 36-48 hours.

"The rain will be heaviest across western facing hills, in particular parts of the southern Pennines and northern Peak District where we could see up to 120mm over the course of the warning period with 40-70mm of rain widely across the whole Amber area.

"Heavy rain will impact the whole of England and Wales by Wednesday with Yellow warnings for rain in force.

"By Thursday 100-150mm of rain could fall over high ground in Wales and Northern England. As well as rainfall, rapid snow melt will add to these accumulations, adding 5-10mm in the worst affected areas."

Leeds three-day forecast as weather warning kicks in

Tuesday

The city will be hit with heavy rain all day, beginning at 6am and continuing through the evening, with highs of 8°C.

The 'feels like' temperature will be more like 5°C so it is likely that Tuesday will be a cool and wet day.

Wednesday

Heavy rain will turn to light showers from midnight, with light rain coming in again from 3am and lasting until 9am, when heavy rain will set in again.

The heavy rain will continue through most of the day, giving way to light rain once again from 9pm.

Thursday

Light rain will continue into the early hours of Thursday morning but, from 3am, it will be dry and cloudy.

The day will remain dry but cool, with highs of 5°C and sunny intervals setting in around 3pm to make way for a clear night.
