When Kostas Tsimikas could make his Liverpool debut

Whenever Liverpool make a move in the transfer market there is often great excitement - and with good reason.

It stems from the fact Michael Edwards and his team have a record of unearthing world-class players before bringing them to Anfield and the arrival of any new face at the club, therefore, now brings with it a real sense of anticipation.

Every transfer is accompanied with a feeling the Reds may have found another gem or that a sensational player is ready to ply his trade under Jurgen Klopp and this summer, with the arrival of Kostas Tsimikas, that has been no different.

The Anfield faithful will, of course, be keen for the Greece international to show what he can do.

However, in order to perform in competitive action he will need to replace Andy Robertson in the side - who Klopp regards as the best left-back in world football - and so there will be great interest when the time for a change comes around.

Tsimikas has not been brought in to usurp the Scotland captain, but more to provide back-up and competition in what has become one of Liverpool's most important areas on the pitch.

Indeed, with the demands on the full-backs at an extreme level in this current Liverpool team and Robertson's tireless running and high-energy, all-action displays a trademark of his play, Reds staff knew a deputy would be needed.

And so, following an extensive three-year recruitment process, that is where Tsimikas came in.

Both players have a similar style and output, while club staff were said to be impressed by the tenacity shown by the 24-year-old and it is understood that the player himself - who comes from a family of Liverpool fans - extensively studied Robertson in an effort to get up to speed for what he believed would be a big move to a European giant this summer.

But when might he make his debut?

Robertson missed just two Premier League matches due to a slight injury last term and featured in every European and international match.

He was not included in the League Cup squad at any time and was only brought into play in the FA Cup at the fifth round stage against Chelsea.

And that may give us some indication as to when Tsimikas might make his debut for the Reds - injury and fitness permitting for both players, of course.

Liverpool will enter the League Cup in Round Three this season, due to competing in Europe, and that match is set to take place on September 22 or 23 - just 10 days after the Reds' first game in the Premier League against Leeds United.

Fans are likely to get their first glimpse of Tsimikas on Saturday against Stuttgart with Klopp setting up his side and making changes during the first friendly of the season.

Overall, the fixture schedule for Klopp's men is incredibly busy this year, and it would seem sensible for the manager to rest his first-team stars when opportunity arises - like during League Cup games - while also giving chances to talented young players and recent arrivals to show what they can do.
