When Jota can be registered for Celtic in Champions League explained

New Celtic signing Jota is ineligible to play in the Champions League tonight against Aston Villa.

The returning fan favourite is not available for selection due to UEFA squad registration rules.

However, he WILL be free to compete in the knockout stage of the competition.

Brendan Rodgers had to submit a squad for the league phase of the competition with no changes allowed to be made before the conclusion of the revamped segment of the competition.

But, the Celtic boss will be allowed to make three changes to his squad before the knockout play-off round matches.

Clubs are still limited to a 25-man squad size but can make three changes before the next stage of the tournament.

A UEFA explanation on whether squads can be altered reads: "Yes, if they get through the league phase. Ahead of the knockout phase, clubs can register a maximum of three new players by 24:00 CET on 6 February 2025.

"Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or league phase of the Champions League, Europa League or Conference League.

"The overall limit of 25 players on List A remains, though, along with the quota of eight locally-trained players."

With Kyogo Furuhashi and Alex Valle leaving the club, two spaces will immediately become available with it more than likely Jota will be added.
