When is World Book Day 2015? Everything you need to know

World Book Day is less than two weeks away - so still plenty of time for your kids to plan their costumes.

It's a time to dress up as your favourite character and celebrate reading.

Here's everything you need to know about the literary event.

When is World Book Day?

This year it falls on Thursday, March 5 but in other countries World Book Day is celebrated on April 23 - William Shakespeare's birthday.

In the UK and Ireland, World Book Day is on the first Thursday of March. According to organisers, this date came about after serious thought and lengthy discussion to take into consideration religious holidays, school terms and potential conflict with other charitable activities.

What is World Book Day?

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and - most importantly it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

The event is in its 18th year and children of all ages will once again come together to appreciate reading.

The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

Book tokens will be given to children so they can purchase £1 books from a special selected list of titles.

How can I get involved?

If your children's school has registered for World Book Day, there should be plenty of activities they can get involved in from quizzes to sponsored reads to dressing up as your favourite book character. Contact your school to find out what is going on.
