When is the vote on Plan B restrictions and will it be passed?

As the nation heads into a plan B response to the increasingly concerning spread of the Omicron variant, MPs will vote on new measures later this week.

The new legislation is likely to be split into three three separate votes, writes The Express.

Votes for Covid passports will have their own independent vote, with this measure the most contentious among Tory members.

The Covid passport legislation will require people wanting to enter places like nightclubs to show proof of double vaccination or a negative Covid test.

A separate vote for increased mask wearing.

The final vote will be on whether a daily negative test result should allow those exposed to a positive case to avoid self-isolation.

This is largely due to the government's concern over a backbench rebellion from its own MPs.

Keir Starmer has announced that his party will back the new measures, which will almost certainly see the measures pass, though they have raised concerns that they do not go far enough.

The opposition leader said: “I’m not supporting the Prime Minister on Tuesday, I’m supporting our NHS, and I’m supporting the public in relation to this pandemic.”

He also added that, whilst he is not “comfortable” with vaccine passports, he believes they are necessary to halt the spread of Omicron.

Around 60 Conservative MPs are expected to rebel against the new measures, which would represent the largest rebellion Boris Johnson has seen yet.

A separate vote will also be held on whether frontline NHS staff should be required by law to be vaccinated.

A total of 633 Omicron cases were reported on Saturday, however experts say the actual number is likely to be much higher.

A report by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has made for grim reading, predicting the UK faces a big wave of Omicron infections in January.

The vote in the chamber is set for Tuesday, though a specific time has not yet been set yet.

Tory MPs expected to rebel include former cabinet minister Esther McVey and chairman of the 1922 committee, Graham Brady.
